Pencil waves obey smoothing with loss
the headline result of the appendix

Let be real symmetric matrices, , and
put and .
Suppose that on an open cone this
eigenvalue is simple and is positive definite on .
For every , and Schwartz function
on ,
The constant may depend on the pencil. The same assertion holds for a
simple smallest eigenvalue with negative definite transverse Hessian.
In plain English
For real symmetric matrices with simple and with positive definite transverse Hessian on an open cone , the wave obeys an estimate with . The bound is for , and Schwartz . The same holds for a simple smallest eigenvalue with negative definite transverse Hessian.
Why it's here
This is the theorem of the appendix: a sharp-exponent square-function-free local smoothing estimate with only a logarithmic loss, for waves whose characteristic sheet is curved but comes from a symmetric system rather than the Euclidean cone. It is proved through the chain of claims: the polarization chart, a conserved positive current, a determinant-energy barrier argument giving a periodic cap estimate, and finally a rescaling argument that removes the periodicity.
Classified novel:
A local smoothing estimate at the critical exponent p_c=2n/(n-1) with only a logarithmic loss, for curved characteristic sheets of symmetric pencils, has no prior analogue; it goes beyond the known decoupling-based ε-loss local smoothing (Guth–Wang–Zhang for the Euclidean cone). Its proof rests on the paper's own polarization chart, conserved positive current and determinant-energy barrier argument.
